The Island of Doctor Moreau

H. G. Wells · 1896 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Picked out of a lifeboat and put ashore on a nameless Pacific island, a shipwrecked gentleman is housed by a drunken medical assistant and a large white-haired man whose inner compound is fenced, locked, and audible at night. The things that carry his luggage and recite a law about not going on all fours and not sucking up drink were not born in the shape they now hold. Wells wrote it in the year of the Wilde trial and later called it a youthful exercise in blasphemy.
