The Invisible Man

H. G. Wells · 1897 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A stranger in bandages, blue goggles and a wide hat takes a room at a Sussex inn in February, pays in advance, and asks only to be left alone with his bottles. Village curiosity and an unpaid bill get the wrappings off, and the man who was under them begins a career of housebreaking, assault and open declaration across the downs. The premise is spent in the first chapters so that the book can be about what a man does the moment he cannot be seen.
