The Food of the Gods
Two careless experimental chemists produce a meal that overrides whatever tells a living thing to stop growing, and what leaks out of their Kentish trial farm becomes wasps the size of dogs, rats that hunt in the lanes, and nettles twenty feet high. Fed to infants by way of a demonstration, it raises a generation of giants who reach their full height in a country built to a sixth their scale and legislated against from the day they can walk. A farce about escaped vermin turns into an argument about size, and about what a small world does with anything it cannot fit.
