The Fatal Eggs
A Moscow zoologist working on amoebae finds a red band inside his microscope beam that makes whatever lies under it grow and breed at monstrous speed, and the newspapers have it before he has finished measuring anything. A state farm manager with a requisition order carries the apparatus off to restock the republic's chickens after a plague, and the crates that reach him from abroad hold the wrong eggs. Bulgakov's first sustained satire on Soviet officialdom, written in open answer to Wells's The Food of the Gods.
