The Days of the Turbins

Mikhail Bulgakov · 1926 CE · Play · Russian · Modernist

The same Kyiv apartment, now a stage set - lamp, piano, guitar, cream blinds - while the Hetman is flown out in bandages, a colonel dismisses his own cadets rather than send them to be cut up, and Petlyura's men take the city. Bulgakov cut his novel down to four acts for Stanislavsky's company, who staged it over official objections and kept it running for years, reportedly because Stalin went back to it again and again. He spent the rest of his life being attacked for its sympathy with the losing side.
