Hadji Murat
A celebrated Avar commander breaks with Shamil and rides into the Russian lines, offering to fight for the Tsar if the army will free his family from the imam's hands. Officers pass him along a chain of courteous delays that reaches Nicholas I himself, while in the mountains his son is held and the price of waiting rises. Held back from publication in Tolstoy's lifetime and printed after his death, it is his return to pure narrative after thirty years of religious argument.
