Childhood
Leo Tolstoy · 1852 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian
A ten-year-old boy on his family's estate records the hunt, the German tutor's tears, the servants' rooms and the first grief that teaches him to watch himself grieving. Nothing dramatic is demanded of the summer; the drama lies in how precisely a child's vanity, shame and love can be set down. Tolstoy's first published work, sent anonymously to Nekrasov's Contemporary while its author was serving with the artillery in the Caucasus.
