How Much Land Does a Man Need?

Leo Tolstoy · 1886 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A peasant boasts that with land enough he would fear nothing, not even the devil, who is in the room and takes the remark as an offer. Each purchase contents him briefly until the Bashkirs beyond the Volga name their price: a thousand roubles for as much ground as he can walk round between sunrise and sunset. One of the parables Tolstoy wrote after his religious crisis, deliberately pitched to be read aloud to peasants.
