Aesop's Fables
Short animal stories attached to the name of a slave on Samos: the fox and the grapes he cannot reach, the tortoise and the hare, the boy who calls wolf, the wind and the sun arguing over a traveler's cloak. Each runs a few lines and closes on a moral, many of them supplied by later editors who found the tale had arrived without one. Antiquity's most durable teaching device, and the reason a European writer can still stage an entire argument by naming an animal.
