Family Happiness

Leo Tolstoy · 1859 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

A seventeen-year-old orphan on a country estate falls in love with her guardian, a friend of her dead father and twice her age, and tells afterwards how the courtship, the marriage and the first winter went. Petersburg drawing rooms, admiration and a season at Baden do to the arrangement what neither of them had allowed for, and the account stays hers throughout. Written three years before Tolstoy's own marriage and disowned by him almost as soon as it appeared.
