The Song of Roland
Anonymous · c. 1100 CE · Poem · French · Medieval
Charlemagne's rearguard is left holding a Pyrenean pass under his nephew Roland while the army crosses back into France, and a Saracen force many times its size comes on. Roland carries a horn that would bring the emperor back and refuses to sound it. Feudal loyalty and pride told as sacred history.
