Homage to Catalonia

George Orwell · 1938 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · English · Contemporary

Arriving in Barcelona at Christmas 1936 to write about the war, an Englishman finds a city where tipping has stopped and the loudspeakers play revolutionary songs, and joins the POUM militia instead of reporting on it. Months of cold, lice and almost no ammunition on the Aragon front are followed by leave in a Barcelona where the Communists are hunting his own party through the streets. Written in fury at what the British left-wing press was printing, and out of the months he later said had turned the scale for everything he wrote afterwards.
