Coming Up for Air

George Orwell · 1939 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

George Bowling, forty-five, fat, an insurance salesman in a mortgaged suburb, collects a new set of false teeth and seventeen pounds won on a horse and decides to spend both on a secret week in the Thames-valley town where he grew up. He is going back for a pool full of enormous carp behind a country house, and for an England before 1914 that he can still taste. Bombers drone over the whole book; Orwell wrote it in Morocco in the year of Munich.
