Down and Out in Paris and London

George Orwell · 1933 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · English · Contemporary

A young Englishman living on private lessons in a Paris slum loses his pupils, pawns his clothes, and takes work as a plongeur washing dishes seventeen hours a day in the basement of a smart hotel. Back in London he tramps between casual wards with a pavement artist called Bozo, learning the law of the spike and the economics of tea and two slices. His first book, published under a pen name he adopted so that his family need not be shamed by it.
