Heart of a Dog

Mikhail Bulgakov · 1968 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

A celebrated Moscow surgeon coaxes a scalded stray in out of a doorway with a length of sausage, then transplants into it the pituitary and testes of a dead balalaika player knifed in a bar. The dog becomes a man, takes a name, obtains papers and a post exterminating cats for the city, and invites the house committee into the professor's seven rooms. Typed in 1925 and confiscated by the secret police, it answers Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau and went unprinted in the Soviet Union for sixty years.
