The Passion of New Eve

Angela Carter · 1977 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Evelyn arrives from England to teach in a New York coming apart under rats, militias and armed separatists, ruins a Czech dancer named Leilah, and drives west into the desert to be rid of the consequences. Underground at Beulah he is taken by a many-breasted surgeon-goddess who intends to remake him as the mother of a new race, and what she begins is finished by a polygamous poet called Zero and by the Hollywood actress whose films Evelyn had worshipped since boyhood. Angela Carter called it an anti-mythic novel and wrote it alongside the study of Sade she published two years later.
