Heroes and Villains
Generations after a war, the Professors and their Soldiers keep order inside concrete towers while the Barbarians move through the forest and the Out People rot at the edges of both. Marianne, a Professor's daughter who watched her brother killed in a raid, hides a wounded Barbarian boy and afterwards leaves with him, and finds his tribe governed by a defrocked Professor who is assembling a religion for them out of tattoos and half-remembered scripture. Angela Carter described the book as a post-apocalyptic gothic romance, and it is the first of her novels to take the machinery of myth apart in front of the reader.
