Cloud Atlas
Six narratives, from a nineteenth-century Pacific diary to a far-future Hawaii after the collapse, are each cut off halfway, then resumed in reverse order after the central one is told whole. Every story is found, read or watched by a character in the next. Its nested form made Mitchell's reputation, and it was shortlisted for the 2004 Booker.
