The Exploits of Moominpappa

Tove Jansson · 1950 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

Laid up with a chill and a sense of being taken for granted, Moominpappa begins his memoirs and reads each finished chapter aloud to his son and two friends, who keep breaking in to ask where their own fathers come into it. He escapes a Hemulen's foundling home in a paper bag, falls in with an inventor, a philosophical Joxter and a nervous Muddler who lives in a tin, and helps launch a riverboat with a theatre aboard. The listeners' fathers are all in the story, behaving exactly as their sons would rather they had not.
