The Moomins and the Great Flood

Tove Jansson · 1945 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

A small troll and his mother go looking for the father who went off with the Hattifatteners and never came back, through a forest strung with paper lanterns where nothing grows in daylight. A boy who lives inside a tulip lights their way, an ant-lion buries them in sand, and the water keeps rising until the whole country is under it. Jansson drafted the first Moomin book during the war and published it to almost no notice; English readers waited sixty years for it.
