Aethiopica

Heliodorus · c. 250 CE · Novel · Greek · Classical

Bandits come over a dune at the mouth of the Nile onto a wrecked feast, a dying man and a girl sitting among the bodies with a bow across her knees, and how she got there is unwound backwards across the ten books that follow. She is white, she was born in Ethiopia, and she is travelling with a young Delphian and an Egyptian priest toward the kingdom that exposed her at birth. Heliodorus opens in the middle and holds the reader behind what his characters know, a method the Renaissance took up as the model of how prose romance ought to be built.
