Several Perceptions

Angela Carter · 1968 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Joseph Harker, twenty-two and unemployed in a decaying quarter of Bristol, has been left by his girlfriend, sacked from the hospital where he pushed trolleys, and is being counselled by a psychiatrist whose questions he answers in bad faith. Around him move an old busker who was once a concert violinist, a vagrant convinced he is a wolf, and the damaged Anne Blossom who limps and will not say why; the winter runs toward a Christmas party that gathers every one of them into a single room. It took the Somerset Maugham Award, which Angela Carter spent on the journey to Japan that redirected everything she wrote afterwards.
