A man lives in the inner half of a partitioned rented room, sleeping through daylight while his wife receives visitors in the outer half, and is handed coins afterwards that he has no idea how to spend. He experiments instead: with the coins, with the mirror, with a white powder his wife gives him for headaches, with going out at hours he has been told not to. Yi Sang, an architect dead at twenty-six of tuberculosis, wrote the story that made Korean modernism thinkable.
