Murphy

Samuel Beckett · 1938 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A Dublin idler in London ties himself naked to a rocking chair to be rid of the demands of the body, while his fiancée and a small chorus of countrymen comb the city for him. A horoscope sends him to work as an attendant in a mental hospital, where the patients seem to have reached the withdrawal he has been chasing. The first of his books to reach print, written in London and still carrying the comic learning he later stripped out.
