Happy Days
Buried to her waist in a mound of scorched earth, a woman wakes to a bell, says her prayers and works through the contents of her handbag — toothbrush, spectacles, revolver, parasol — keeping up a bright monologue aimed at the husband who crawls about behind the mound. She misquotes scraps of the classics as she goes, hailing the light in Milton's words. Beckett wrote it in English, and the second act tightens the same situation by a further foot of earth.
