The Host
Years after an American military pathologist orders formaldehyde poured down a drain to the Han River, a creature hauls itself onto the Seoul riverbank in daylight and carries off a schoolgirl, and her snack-stand family — slow father, archer aunt, bitter unemployed uncle — break quarantine to get her back while the authorities chase them as infection risks. The state proves more obstructive than the monster at every turn. Bong's record-breaking blockbuster smuggled a political satire inside a creature feature, and Cahiers du Cinéma ranked it fourth among the films of its decade.
