Mother

Bong Joon-ho · 2009 CE · Film · Korean · Contemporary

A widowed herb-seller in a provincial town lives entirely for her mentally disabled adult son, and when he is charged with a schoolgirl's murder she sets out to prove his innocence with a ferocity no lawyer or policeman can match. Written directly for the screen with Park Eun-kyo, it inverts the sacrificial mother of Korean melodrama into something obsessive and unnerving, and carried Bong Joon-ho to his widest arthouse acclaim before Parasite.
