The Beast Within
An engine driver on the Le Havre line loves his locomotive and keeps away from women, because since adolescence the sight of bare flesh has brought on an urge he cannot explain and blames on the generations of drinking behind him. A stationmaster's wife and a lit compartment glimpsed at speed put him exactly where he is useful to somebody else's plan. The railway novel of the cycle takes its hereditary theory to the limit and reads, a century on, like the invention of the crime thriller.
