L'Assommoir

Émile Zola · 1877 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A laundress abandoned by her lover in a Goutte-d'Or hotel takes up with a zinc-roofer who does not drink, and by hard saving opens a shop with a blue front and her name over the door. A fall from a roof puts him in bed for months, and the still in the bar across the street keeps working through the neighbourhood at its own pace. Zola's first commercial success and the first French novel to give working-class Paris its own vocabulary throughout, narration included.
