Jude the Obscure
Jude Fawley, a stonemason who teaches himself Latin and Greek at night, sets his hopes on the university at Christminster and is not admitted. Caught first in a marriage made by trickery, he goes to live with his cousin Sue Bridehead outside the law and finds respectable England closing against them. A hunger for learning and love crushed by class, church and marriage laws.
