Sevasadan

Married young to a petty clerk who cannot forgive her father's disgrace, Suman leaves the house and takes rooms in the courtesans' quarter of Benares, where for the first time she is paid attention and paid money. The municipal board then votes to clear the quarter, and the reformers pressing hardest for it include the men who came to hear her sing. Premchand's first substantial novel, written in Urdu as Bazaar-e-Husn and recast by him in Hindi.
