The Chess Players

Premchand · 1924 CE · Short Story · Indian · Modernist

Two Lucknow noblemen with pensions and nothing to do sit over a chessboard from morning to night, first in one house and then the other, until their wives drive them out to a ruined mosque across the river. There, in 1856, the Company's troops march past to take Awadh from its king while the two men quarrel over an illegal move. Premchand's best-known story, and the one Satyajit Ray filmed fifty years afterwards.
