Idgah
Hamid is four years old, has no parents and has not been told so, and walks three miles with the men of the village to the Eid prayer ground with three paise held in his fist. The other boys spend theirs on the merry-go-round, on clay figures of a policeman and a water-carrier, on sweets; he stands at the ironmonger's stall thinking about his grandmother's burnt fingers. The most widely taught story in Hindi, and the one that fixed Premchand as the writer children read first.
