Pather Panchali

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay · 1929 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

In the Bengali village of Nischindipur a poor priest's family lives on credit and hope: Durga steals fruit from the neighbors, the ancient aunt Indir Thakrun is turned out of the house and taken back in, and small Apu grows up between her songs and the first train he ever sees, crossing a field of white kaash grass. Sarbajaya holds the household together on nothing while debts pull her husband away to look for work elsewhere, and the monsoon comes down on a roof no one can afford to mend. Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's serialised chronicle of village childhood became, a quarter century later, the source of the founding work of modern Indian cinema.
