The Shroud
Ghisu and his son Madhav, leather-workers who have built a life out of doing as little as work requires, sit by a fire roasting stolen potatoes while Madhav's wife labours inside the hut, neither of them willing to go in to her. By morning they need money for a shroud, and the village landlord and the shopkeepers hand it over because a body must be burnt properly. Premchand's last completed story, and the one where his sympathy for the poor stops being consoling.
