Premchand · 1931 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Ramanath marries into a family that expects jewellery he cannot afford, lies to his wife about a necklace he never bought, and begins taking small sums from the municipal office where he clerks. When the shortfall is found he runs to Calcutta, where the police need a witness for a political conspiracy case and are willing to overlook a great deal to get one. Premchand's study of how a domestic vanity becomes state evidence, written while the nationalist trials were filling the courts.
