Felix Holt, the Radical

George Eliot · 1866 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

At the first election held under the Reform Act, a watchmaker's son comes home from medical training refusing to rise out of his class and takes up the education of working men instead. In the same borough a young woman living in a Dissenting minister's house learns that she has a claim on a great estate whose owners have their own reasons for keeping the papers quiet. Eliot's most explicitly political novel; she took legal advice from Frederic Harrison on an inheritance plot knotted enough to have defeated most of her readers.
