During Wind and Rain

Thomas Hardy · 1917 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Four scenes of one family — singing round the candles, clearing moss from the garden paths, breakfasting under a summer tree, moving to a bright new house — are each broken off by a refrain about the years and the rain. The vignettes came from the girlhood diaries of Hardy's first wife, which he was reading after her death. Every stanza builds a domestic picture and the refrain takes it back, so accumulation followed by erasure is the whole method.
