Channel Firing

Thomas Hardy · 1914 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Gunnery practice out at sea is loud enough to break the chancel window-squares and wake the dead in their coffins, who sit upright thinking it is Judgment Day. God tells them it is only the nations at their old practice, that men are no saner now than when he sent them here, and one skeleton wonders aloud whether the world will ever be improved by all their striving. Written in April 1914, months before the guns stopped being practice.
