The Mayor of Casterbridge

Thomas Hardy · 1886 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A young hay-trusser, drunk at a country fair, auctions his wife and baby to a passing sailor for five guineas, and on waking swears off drink for twenty-one years. Eighteen years later he is mayor and the chief corn merchant of the town, a capable Scot has come to work for him, and a woman he half recognises is asking at the door. Subtitled a story of a man of character, it is Hardy's closest approach to the shape of Greek tragedy, everything in it turning on one act that will not stay buried.
