Throne of Blood

Akira Kurosawa · 1957 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Riding back from a victory, two commanders lose their way in the fog of Spider's Web Forest and come on a spirit at a spinning wheel who tells each of them what he is to become. Washizu carries the prophecy home to a wife who sits motionless on the mats and reasons him toward the lord's bedchamber, and the castle is never afterward clear of the forest around it. Kurosawa kept none of Shakespeare's language, borrowing the masks and the gait of Noh instead, and made the Shakespeare film that other Shakespeare films are still measured against.
