Yojimbo

Akira Kurosawa · 1961 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

A masterless samurai walks into a silk town split between two protection rackets and works out that he can sell himself to each in turn and let them ruin one another. He takes a seat on the watchtower to watch the fighting he has arranged, and a pistol in the hands of one boss's brother changes the arithmetic. Kurosawa's dust, telephoto violence and shrugging mercenary were absorbed wholesale by the Italian western.
