Stray Dog

Akira Kurosawa · 1949 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

A rookie Tokyo detective has his pistol lifted on a crowded bus during a sweltering heatwave, and descends through the city's black markets to trace the gun as it begins to be used. Kurosawa first wrote the story as an unpublished novel in the manner of Georges Simenon before filming it, and the result founded the Japanese police procedural while drawing detective and thief as doubles shaped by the same defeated postwar streets.
