Ran

Akira Kurosawa · 1985 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Hidetora Ichimonji, an old warlord who took his territories by massacre, divides three castles among his sons and disowns the one who calls the arrangement madness. Lady Kaede, married into the house that destroyed her own, sets the surviving brothers against each other, while the old man is turned out onto a volcanic plain with only his fool and a blind flute player for company. Kurosawa crossed Lear with the legend of Mōri Motonari and his three arrows, painting the storyboards in oils for a decade before anyone would finance the shoot.
