The Hidden Fortress

Akira Kurosawa · 1958 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Two greedy peasants scavenging a defeated province fall in with a gruff stranger and a silent girl who need help hauling firewood across enemy lines. The wood hides the gold of a broken clan, the stranger is its general and the girl is the heir he is smuggling out, and the pair are told none of it. Kurosawa's first widescreen work took the Silver Bear at Berlin and gave Lucas the two bickering bystanders who became the droids.
