Far from the Madding Crowd
A shepherd who loses his entire flock in one night ends up working for the young woman who refused him, now mistress of her uncle's farm and running it herself in a market full of men. A valentine sent as a joke fixes the whole attention of the neighbouring farmer, and a scarlet-coated sergeant who performs the sword exercise for her in a hollow among the ferns carries it further. Serialised anonymously in the Cornhill, it was Hardy's first popular success and the book in which he first called his country Wessex.
