Unconditional Surrender

Evelyn Waugh · 1961 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Kept from anything resembling employment, the middle-aged officer is at last parachuted into Yugoslavia as a liaison to the partisans, where the war he joined for the sake of an enemy he could recognise has become an alliance with another one. A wife, a bogus Scottish laird and a stranded party of Jewish refugees in Croatia each present him with an obligation he did not seek. Published in America as The End of the Battle, and folded with its predecessors into the 1965 recension Sword of Honour.
