A Fable

William Faulkner · 1954 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

In May 1918 a French corporal and twelve men talk a regiment out of going over the top, the Germans decline to attack either, and for one afternoon the whole Western Front falls silent. The generals of both armies meet to get the war started again, and the old supreme commander, who has private reasons for taking an interest in the corporal, offers him terms in a Paris cell. Faulkner spent ten years on it and thought it his major work; few readers since have agreed.
