The Loved One
An English poet scraping a living at a Los Angeles pet cemetery is sent to arrange a fellow expatriate's funeral at Whispering Glades, a memorial park of vast scale and impeccable taste, and falls for the cosmetician who paints the faces of the dead. Her other suitor is the embalmer whose work she finishes, and both men court her in the language of the trade. Subtitled An Anglo-American Tragedy, it came out of a month Waugh spent in Hollywood over a film of his own that was never made.
