Vile Bodies
A young writer crossing from France has his only manuscript seized and burned by customs as obscene, which leaves him unable to marry the girl he is engaged to and dependent on gossip-column work for money. The Bright Young People move between fancy-dress parties, a motor race and a seance, financed by whoever will still lend. Waugh wrote it as his own first marriage collapsed, and the comedy sours as it goes.
